Indian Railways is the prime mover of the Nation, in service since 150 years. 


Indian Railways is known to have the largest railway network in Asia and world's largest railway system under a single management. 


Indian Railways employs about 1.6 million people, making itself the second largest commercial or utility employer in the world. 


The first Passenger Train ran on 16th April 1853 from Bombay to Thane, Maharashtra.


The Metro in Kolkata was the first underground train. 


First Computerised Reservation System started in New Delhi in 1986.


The first Electric Train ran on 3rd Feb' 1925 (between Bombay VT and Kurla) 


Toilets on Trains were introduced in the year 1891 in 1st Class & in 1907 in the lower classes. Till then people had to wait for the next station to relieve themselves. 


The shortest Station Name is Ib, in Odisha.


The longest Station Name is Sri Venkatanarasimharajuvariapeta, in Tamil Nadu. 


The longest journey time for any train is from Dibrugarh, Assam to Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu and is done by Vivek Express (4286km in 82:30 hours) 


The shortest journey time is on the route between Nagpur and Ajni, and is just 3km


The longest nonstop run (Distance) is done by the Trivandrum Rajdhani. It covers 528 km in 6.5 hrs.


The longest railway platform in the world is that of Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, measuring 4,483 ft in length.


The oldest preserved locomotive is the Fairy Queen from 1855. It is still in working order. 


Indian Railways runs about 14,000 trains daily. 


Indian Railways carries more than 11 million passengers & 1 million tonnes of freight daily. 


The fastest train is the Bhopal-Shatabdi. This runs at a speed up to 140 Km/ph.


The train with a maximum number of halts is the Howrah-Amritsar Express. It has 115 scheduled halts.


Indian Railways is unique in it having stations across State Lines: 1) Navapur (Situated in Maharashtra and Gujarat), 2) Bhawani Mandi (Situated in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan).
