What happened later that morning?


Later that morning,the landlord and his wife found the door of the scientist's room wide open.They couldn't miss the opportunity of investigating his room. They found that the bedclothes were cold, which showed that the scientist had already woken up. In addition to that, the clothes and bandages that he always wore were lying about the room. While Mrs hall was searching the room, she heard a sniff close to her ear. A moment later the hat on the bedpost leapt up and dashed itself into her face. Then the bedroom chair sprung into the air and charged straight at her legs foremost. Pushing them both out of the room, it slammed and locked the door after them.

What happened when the constable came to arrest the scientist?


The constable, Mr Jaffers was quite surprised to find that he had to arrest a man without a head. But, Mr Jaffers never gave up so easily. To him, if a magistrate’s warrant ordered a person’s arrest, then that person had to be arrested, with or without his head.  
He tried to get hold of a man who was becoming more and more invisible as he threw off one garment after another. When Griffin had taken off all his clothes, the constable found himself struggling with someone he could not see at all. The constable was knocked unconscious in the end.

What was the explanation behind the mystery?


The explanation behind the mystery was that the bewildered boys had been following a scientist who had just discovered how to make the human body transparent.
