What are the limitations of extracting energy from:
(a) the wind
(b) waves
(c) tides?

(a) Limitations of wind energy:

(i) need a large open space to install a number of wind mills.
(ii) can be tapped only during specific periods when the wind speed is above 15 km/h.
(iii) wear and tear of windmill parts is quite high.
iv) The set up of wind mills is not economical.

(b) Limitations of wave energy:

Wave energy is viable, only where the waves are very strong. That is, it has constraints of time and location.

(c) Limitations of tidal energy:

i) The height of tidal waves limit the production of tidal energy.
ii) Location where such dams can be built and the tapping of such energy is difficult. The huge amount of silt gets deposited on basins in the dams.

Compare and contrast bio-mass and hydro electricity as sources of energy.

Biomass hydro-electricity
Renewable source. Renewable source.
Clean source Clean source
Rate of availabilty is moderate This sources can be produced only at limited sites.
Combustion of bio-mass is not eco-friendly. Production of the energy causes alot of environmental damage.

Compare and contrast fossil fuels and the Sun as direct sources of energy.

Fossil fuels Sun
1. Fossil fuel is a non-renewable source of energy. 1. Sun is a renewable source of energy.
2. Combustion of fossil fuels causes lot of air-pollution. 2. Solar energy is pollution free.
3. Fossil fuels can be easily tapped. 3. Solar energy is difficult to tap.
