A ball rolls off the top of a staircase with horizontal velocity u. If the height of the step is h and the width is b then at what step the ball hits?

Horizontal velocity = u 

Height of the step = h

Let the ball hit the nth step.

Therefore the ball transverses a horizontal distance of nb and falls vertically by nh.

Equation of trajectory of horizontal projectile,

               straight y equals 1 half gx squared over straight u squared

Substituting y = nh and x = nb, we get,

                    nh equals 1 half fraction numerator straight g left parenthesis nb right parenthesis squared over denominator straight u squared end fraction

What is a scalar quantity?

A physical quantity that requires only magnitude for its complete specification is called a scalar quantity.

What are the basic characteristics that a quantity must possess so that it may be a vector quantity?

A quantity must possess the direction and must follow the vector axioms. Any quantity that follows the vector axioms are classified as vectors. 


What is a vector quantity?

A physical quantity that requires direction along with magnitude, for its complete specification is called a vector quantity.
