A particle is projected with velocity ‘u’ in two different ways: first such that horizontal range is maximum and second such that the height is maximum. What is the ratio of maximum height to the maximum horizontal range?

Horizontal range is maximum for angle of projection 45°.

Maximum horizontal range is,

straight R subscript max equals fraction numerator straight u squared sin left parenthesis 2 cross times 45 right parenthesis over denominator straight g end fraction equals straight u squared over straight g

The height is maximum, if the projectile is projected in vertically upward direction, i.e. θ = 90°.

Maximum height is,

straight H subscript max equals fraction numerator straight u squared sin squared left parenthesis 90 right parenthesis over denominator 2 straight g end fraction equals fraction numerator straight u squared over denominator 2 straight g end fraction

So, the ratio of maximum height to the maximum horizontal range is given by,

straight H subscript max over straight R subscript max equals 1 half
