HOW TO PRACTICE EMPATHY?
HOW TO PRACTICE EMPATHY?

The world is moving in a whole new direction, where people seem to be busy all the way round. But deep down inside, they are living a detached life in despair and isolation. On the face of it, they have thousands of friends on social media, but not a single real friend in real life. Does it make any sense?

Oh! That reminds me of a personal heart wrenching experience. Let me share it with you.

It so happened recently that I went to my old place (society), and there I found an old friend (from whom I hadn’t heard for about 3 years). That person had a good job, earning well, everything was fine, but the very same person had tears in her eyes as she asked me to come and visit her at times. She said she had no one to lean onto or hang out with. I was taken aback after hearing all of it, and showed empathy that I would visit her often.

Taking inference from this example, it is extremely important to show empathy to our near and dear ones. People at home, school, college, office need your empathy.

So, let’s learn in this article about how to practice empathy in real life.

But, hang on, if you don’t know what empathy is- we will begin with the meaning is.

WHAT IS EMPATHY?

According to Merriam Webster dictionary,

Empathy is “the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner”

In simpler words, Empathy is the ability to understand the thoughts and feelings of other people. Having an understanding of other people’s perception about a particular situation can be recognized as empathy.

The image shows one women showing empathy towards another upset women.
PRACTICE EMPATHY

At an advanced level, empathy empowers you to use you insights to scaffold other people through challenging scenarios and improve their mood.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SYMPATHY AND EMPATHY

Unknowingly, people often confuse empathy for sympathy. But in its real sense, these two are whole different concepts.

While sympathy means feeling sorry or pity for someone, empathy accounts for understanding and sharing the feelings of other people. For example, you can feel sympathy for even an orphan on a street, but empathy is for the people whom you know personally and understand their situations.

I think we have learned enough about empathy, now is the time to embrace how to practice empathy?

Researches show that empathy is partly innate and partly can be acquired, so let’s focus on the acquisition, and inherent empathy will foment sideways.

5 WAYS TO PRACTICE EMPATHY

1.STEP INTO OTHER’S SHOES

Talk to people and learn about how they feel and face the challenges of their life. Ask them about their perception on you shared and mutual experiences. Spend time with them and delve deeper into their lives.

These people could be your friends, colleagues, family members, relatives or any other acquaintances. Try to get under their skin to know how they feel about particular situations in life.

2. ASK QUESTIONS

Ask questions to practice empathy
ASK QUESTIONS

In this discourse with your clients or colleagues, ask provocative and simulative questions about life. Have a list of pre-prepared 3-4 questions and hurl them in between the conversation.

Such bespoke conversation allures the clients, who feel more connected and are thus able to form trustworthy bonds with your organizations.

In case of colleagues, try to indulge in shared lunches and one-day trips to get to know people better. Moreover, as and when you see a colleague off the loop, have a talk over the coffee to elicit their problems.

3. ASSESS YOUR PREJUDICES

Believe it or not, we all have furtive prejudices or biases. These could be surreptitious or not-so-hidden prejudices. And if just so you think- you don’t have any biases; you should wake up and smell the coffee.

These biases (which could be about age, gender, sex, race, etc) often hinder in our ability to empathize. Therefore, self-introspect to examine your biases and try to be elusive of them.

4. BE CURIOUS

Do you consider yourself superior to others, and think you don’t have anything to learn from them- then you may be wrong my friend. Every person has their own abilities and talents, and you can learn something from everyone.

Consequently, be curious to learn about new things from people around you. Hear out their theories and experiences to have better insights about things that you may not have known.

5. ASK FOR FEEDBACK

One sure-shot technique to know about your empathy bubble is to ask for genuine feedback from friends, colleagues, relatives, and family. Know from them about their though-process and feedback about your demeanour. And the process doesn’t halt here. Check with them periodically to know about your progress about the same.

FINAL THOUGHT

Empathy is one of the most important components of emotional intelligence that makes us humane. Being a social animal, you must practice empathy in your daily life and be more connected with the people around you. You never know what you small-talk could mean so much to the other person.

Keep practising Empathy!

HOW DO YOU RESPOND WHEN RECEIVING FEEDBACK?
HOW DO YOU RESPOND WHEN RECEIVING FEEDBACK?

Taking criticism is not at all an easy haul. While it may be easy and euphoric to hear out positive feedback, negative feedback renders inconvenience and distress. Nonetheless, if one must drape it as constructive criticism, one can truly benefit from the negative feedback as well.

Not always you have to take critique with a pinch of salt. Instead, prune out the things that you know you can improve; and see how it works its magic in your professional career.

If you can realize the fact that nobody is perfect, and there's always room for improvement- feedback acquisition becomes far more valuable. True to its essence, feedback opens up new avenues for you to shine.

The image shows a women receiving feedback from the senior employer.
A WOMAN RECEIVING FEEDBACK FROM THE SENIOR

Hence, in this blog, we will learn about the 7-simple steps to follow while receiving and responding to feedback.

So, let's get the ball rolling.

7 STEPS FOR RECEIVING AND RESPONDING TO FEEDBACK

1.DEEP BREATHE AND LISTEN

Your manager knocks, come feedback, and you are all stressed up and anxious to the core. This apprehension will further emasculate your mind to take feedback positively and end up in despair.

Contrastingly, whenever such a situation comes up-take a deep breath, release the stress, and be all ears to what the manager has to say. Only when you listen proactively; you understand where the feedback is leading to.

As you are processing the criticism, take the feedback on the issue or work(that requires remedification); and not on yourself as a person. Little did you know that feedback is not a corroboration of faultfinding within you as a person; but merely as a process for the elevation of your work.

2.DON'T BE DEFENSIVE

The first thing whenever someone is pointing to your faults, you end up being defensive. Failing to realize that being defensive and covering your lapses will do you no more good than harm.

Stop sugar-coating or backing up your mistakes with irrelevant excuses or by tagging blame on others' shoulders. If there was a lag behind on your part, own it and ask for ways of repair.

3.TRY TO UNDERSTAND

Your feedback provider will actually appreciate it if you are listening and trying to understand the feedback. Instead of trying to utilize the little voice in your head to argue or prepare your responses, concentrate on how you comprehend the viewpoint you are receiving.

4.ASK FOR EXAMPLES AND CLARIFICATION

Responding to the feedback is secondary first of all, you should have a clear comprehension of what are the areas of refinement. Ask the employer to state some examples where things went out of hand. These examples will makes things crystal clear on what went wrong.

Furthermore, solicit them to share when, where, and under what circumstances their perception was born. This will help you to understand the bigger picture from which the review fomented.

5.ASK FOR WAYS OF IMPROVEMENT

Moreover, taking the conversation forward ask the employer to elucidate on the matter. Evoke them to shed some light on the ways of remedy. Brainstorm ideas together to come out with the best possible solutions to refurbish the issue.

In the end, you can simply respond with a message- "thank you for letting me know." Believe me, even if you don't feel like saying- Thank you, this is the best way to respond to critical feedback.

6.TAKE A BREAK TO REFLECT

Once the feedback session is over, take a short break in tranquillity, or go out for a walk. Use this time most efficaciously with reflecting and mulling over what was being said.

Ensure that you reflect on the issue or the problem; and not on the person who gave feedback or on yourself. The problem is not you or your employer, but the issue persists in the work process that needs repair.

The speculation will result in opening up the mind for the evolution of solutions for the problem that prevailed.

7.DEVISE A FOLLOW-UP PLAN

The image shows a person making a follow-up plan
FOLLOW-UP PLAN

With all that reflection and awakening, the feedback needs a follow-up plan and execution to apparently prove its worth.  The feedback session is of no use until and unless it bears fruition with implementation.

Consequently, with all that you had acquired through constructive criticism and reflection, use that to formulate a follow-up plan. Chasing down the new plan, elicit responses from the employer if the new approach is working effectively.

In this manner, you can truly make the most out of the feedback and capsize it into upgrading and prosperity.

WHAT IS MORAL INTEGRITY?
WHAT IS MORAL INTEGRITY?

What would you do in this situation? There was an important company file that you mistakenly permanently deleted from the system. Although, you tried to revive it but to no success. So what would you do in the fear of danger? The deed is already done and can't be changed, but what entails is up to you. Either you can confess the truth which may result in reprimand, or you can behave as if nothing happened (and ultimately what the cat is out of the box, you lie that you didn't do it). While the former may cost you a rebuking, yet it shows your moral integrity-choosing which is always a hard choice (but to no doubt-the right choice)

Taking clues from this example, in the article, we are going to mull over what is moral integrity and how do you exhibit it at the workplace?

Let's dive in now.

WHAT IS MORAL INTEGRITY?

Moral integrity quote by nelson Mandela

Moral integrity is the state-of-the-mind or cognition to behave rightfully, even at a time when no one is watching. While it's easier to do the right thing in front of everyone, standing up for truth in aloofness displays your moral integrity.

In another scenario, when there is a treasure at the end of wrongdoing and pain and suffering at the end of the right deed- choosing the latter validates you as an ethical person.

BENEFITS OF MORAL INTEGRITY

People with moral integrity stick to their ideals, ethical principles, which they don't compromise for the sake of ephemeral pleasures. They don't cheat, lie, or cut corners. Hence, such morally righteous people can be trusted and make-up a better workplace ambiance.

Moral integrity at the workplace bolsters and valorizes strong relationships with clients and vendors owing to the trust that you will keep your word. Moreover, in a worst-case scenario, you will act honorably, instead of using malpractices.

EXAMPLES OF MORAL INTEGRITY

  1. Your team missed a deadline due to some glitches on the part of one of the teammates. Instead of putting blame on him, you accept the mistake as a team lead and promise to be assiduous about deadlines in the offing.
  2. At lunch, some of your colleagues are gossiping about the new girl. Instead of becoming a part of badmouthing a new intern, you prefer to stay out of that scenario.

HOW TO DISPLAY MORAL INTEGRITY AT THE WORKPLACE?

Working in any company, or organization, your moral integrity upholds you as a responsible person who can be trusted and advance in your career. Moreover, it guides you to cherish a positive work culture at the workplace.

Here are some of the method's by which you can display moral integrity:

1.BE PUNCTUAL AND READY TO WORK

Always be punctual whether you are coming to the office or showing up for any meeting. If there arises any catch-22 situation inform the manager forthright, instead of being absent without notice. Also, show your enthusiasm and vigor to work and accomplish tasks before the deadlines.

2.BE RESPECTFUL

Whatever be the situation, even if conflict incites, ensure to be respectful towards the other person. There is no harm in stating your viewpoints, but at the same time respecting others' opinions is moral integrity.

3.BE ACCOUNTABLE

"To human is to err". Everyone commits mistakes but a person with moral integrity accepts his shortcoming or wrongdoing, rather than covering it up with fallacy.

4.ADHERE TO COMPANY POLICIES

Every company or organization has its own set of policies to maintain professionalism and a positive environment for employees at the workplace. As a person of integrity, read the policies meticulously and follow demonstrate them at the workplace. Also, set a positive example for others.

5. REVERENCE FOR PROPERTY

Respect the workplace property to show moral integrity
RESPECT WORKPLACE PROPERTY

Treat company's property, colleagues' belongings, and any other things with reverence. Do not use company property or supplies for personal use. Even if you borrow something return it to its rightful owner.
