Usha wants to design a salwar kameez for school children. Draw and explain how she can use all the five principles of design in this dress.

Balance: Balance is the equal distribution of weights. (Actual or virtual) symmetry between the left and right halves of the body garment is termed as the symmetrical balance. The purpose of balance is to bring a satisfying relationship between all the designs.

Proportion: The relative length of two parts of a garment is termed as a proportion. The degree and method of subordinating some part of a design to other are shown as a proportion.

Harmony:

  • Salwar and dupatta having matching colour, texture and print as on kameez.
  • Repetition of border and piping on salwar and kameez.

Workmanship is done:

  • Kurta size would be comfortable.
  • The measurements required are chest/bust, length of kurta and sleeve length.
  • The hem of the salwar is stiffened to enable the garment to fall and drape well.
  • The salwar measurement can be done one and half time of hips as body changes due to quick development.

Emphasis:

  • Logo on the pocket
  • Embroidery on the neckline
  • Contrast colour/ piping / pocket etc.
