Ozone Layer

  1. The ozone layer is a layer in earth’s atmosphere which contains relatively high concentrations of ozone.
  2. This layer absorbs 93-99% of the sun’s high-frequency ultraviolet light, which is potentially damaging to life on earth.
  3. Over 91% of the ozone in Earth's atmosphere is present here.
  4. It is mainly located in the lower portion of the stratosphere from approximately 10 km to 50 km above Earth's surface, though the thickness varies seasonally and geographically.
  5. In the upper reaches of the atmosphere, a molecule containing three atoms of oxygen is found. This would mean a formula of O3 and this is called ozone.

The ozone layer is formed in the stratosphere at an altitude of 25-30 km due to the following reactions in the presence of ultraviolet radiation of the sun.
