1. The process began during the national struggle for freedom.
2. First draft 1928, then 1931. Motilal Nehru and 8 leaders demanded in the draft: universal adult franchise, social justice, right to freedom and liberty.
3. Participation in Provincial Legislatures helped Indians in framing their constitution.
4. Leaders inspired by French Revolution, British parliamentary system and the Bill of Rights of the US.
5. They also learnt what the British were denying Indian citizens.

1. An assembly of the elected delegates entrusted with the task of drafting the Constitution of India. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly.
2. Later, when the country was divided into India and Pakistan, the Constituent Assembly also got divided.
3. At the beginning, the assembly decided on some basic principles. Then a Drafting Committee was formed for giving the final shape to the Constitution. Its chairman was Dr. B.R. Ambedkar
4. The Assembly adopted the Constitution on 26 November 1949 but it came into effect on 26 January 1950.

It contains the philosophy of our constitution. It lays importance on the following principles:

1. Justice, social, economic and political.
2. Liberty of thoughts, expression, belief, faith and worship.
3. Equality of status and of opportunity.
4. Fraternity assuring the dignity of the individual and the unity and integrity of the nation

1. Our national movement was not merely a struggle against a foreign rule.
2. It was also a struggle to rejuvenate our country and to transform our society and politics.
3. There were sharp differences of opinion within the freedom struggle about the path India should take after Independence.
