Non-Food Crops

Cotton:

  1. Cotton is one of the main raw materials for cotton textile industry.
  2. India is the third-largest producer of cotton in the world.
  3. Requires high temperature and light rainfall for growing.
  4. It is a kharif crop and requires 6 to 8 months to mature.
  5. Major cotton-producing states are – Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh etc.

Jute

Jute:

  1. It is known as the golden fibre.
  2. Requires high-temperature and well-irrigated fertile soil.
  3. Grown in West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Orissa and Meghalaya.

Rubber

  1. Equatorial crop but under special conditions it is also grown in tropical and sub-tropical areas.
  2. It requires moist and humid climate.
  3. Rainfall above 200 cm.
  4. Temperature Above 25°C.
  5. It is mainly grown in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andaman and Nicobar islands and Garo hills of Meghalaya.
  6. India is the fifth largest producer of natural rubber.
