Hygiene, Disease and Everyday Resistance

  1. When the French set about creating a modern Vietnam, they decided to rebuild Hanoi.
  2. In 1903, the modern part of Hanoi was struck by bubonic plague.
  3. The city of Hanoi was built by using modern engineering and architecture.
  4. Refusal from the old city drained straight out into the river or, during heavy rains or floods, overflowed into the streets. Thus what was installed to create a hygienic environment in the French city became the cause of the plague.
  5. The sewer system; which was being touted as the symbol of hygiene became the perfect breeding ground for rats and led to the plague epidemic in Hanoi.

The Rat Hunt

  1. In 1902, the French part of Hanoi was hit by a rat menace.
  2. To stop the spread of plague, as rat hunt was started in 1902.
  3. Vietnamese workers were hired for the task and were paid for each rat being caught.
  4. The payment was done when a tail of a rat was shown as a proof that a rat had been killed. Many people began just clipping the tails and collecting the bounty.
  5. Many people even began to raise rat to earn more.
