R H Whittaker (1969) proposed a Five Kingdom Classification; Monera, Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia.
All the prokaryotic organisms were grouped under Kingdom- Monera and unicellular organisms were grouped in Kingdom- Protista. The fungi were placed in Kingdom- Fungi and Kingdom- Plantae and Animalia commonly referred as plant and animal kingdoms.
