Consider the following reaction
The product [A] is
HCOOH (formic acid)
CH3COOH (acetc acid)
CHO-CHO (glyoxal)
C2O4H2 (oxalic acid)
Iodoform test is not answered by
C2H5OH
CH3OH
CH3COCH3
CH3-CH(OH)-CH3
B.
CH3OH
Iodoform test is a characteristic test of -CO-CH3 group. Ethyl alcohol and ethyl chloride also give this test as in basic conditions, these are oxidised into acetaldehyde (CH3CHO) which give iodoform test. Isopropyl alcohol gives acetone on oxidation, which also give the test.
R-CO-CH3 + 3I2 + 4NaOH → + RCOONa + 3NaI + 3H2O
CH3OH on oxidation gives HCHO, which does not have -CO-CH3 group, hence, it does not give iodoform test.
