The Policy of Appeasement.
i. Appeasement in a political context is a diplomatic policy of making political or material concessions to an enemy power in order to avoid conflict. The term is most often applied to the foreign policy of the British Prime Ministers Ramsay Macdonald, Stanley Baldwin and Neville Chamberlain towards Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy between 1935 and 1939.
ii. Great Britain, France and the United States had the power and resources to check the aggressive actions of Germany, Italy and Japan during the 1930s but they failed to do so on account of the policy of appeasement followed by them towards the Axis Powers.
iii. Their policy of appeasement reflected their desire for peace, an attempt on their part to recover their bearings and to re-assert their self- respect and “exasperation with anyone who would try to probe that mass of emotional pretence and questionable reasoning.”
