20.

In the adjoining figure ABC is a right angled triangle with
BAC = 90°.

(i) Prove ADB ~ CDA.

(ii) If BD = 18 cm CD = 8 cm Find AD.

(iii) Find the ratio of the area of ADB is to area of CDA.

Given,

ABC is a right angled triangle with BAC = 90°

Let consider CAD = x

 DAB = 90° - x

DBA = 180 - (90° + 90° - x) = x

Thus, CAD = DBA     ...(i)

In ADB and CDA,

ADB = ADC     [ each 90°]

ABD = CAD     [From euation 1]

 ADB ~ CDA [ Angle - Angle similarity]

(ii) Since the corresponding sides of similar triangles are proportional.

 CDAD = DADB

 AD2 = DB × CD

 AD2 = 18 × 8

 AD2 = 144

Thus, AD = 12 cm

(iii)  The ratio of the areas of two similar triangles is equal to the ratio of the squares of their corresponding sides.

So, Area of ADBArea of CDA = AD2CD2

                             = 14464

                             = 94

Thus, the required ratio is 9: 4.
