Verify Rolle’s theorem for the following function:

f(x) = e- xsinx on [0, π]


Given equation is, f(x) = e- xsinx

(i) f(x) is continuous on [0, π] because - x & sinx are continuous function on its domain.

(ii) e- x and sin(x) are diffentiable on (0, π)

(iii) f(0) = e- 0.sin(0) = 0

And, f(π) = e- π.sin(π) = 0

(iv) Let c be number such that f'(c) = 0

 f'(x) = e- x.cosx +sinx.e- x(- 1)

 f'(c) = e- ccosc - sinc

 f'(c) = 0

e- c (cos(c) - sin(c)) = 0

 e- c  0

 cosc - sinc = 0

tanc = 1

 c = π4, 3π4, 5π4, ......

 π4  [0, π]

Therefore, Rolle's theorem is verified.
