If we mix a pentavalent impurity in a crystal lattice of Ge, what type of semiconductor formation will occur?

  • p-type

  • n-type

  • Both (a) and (b)

  • None of these

B.

n-type

When a pentavalent impurity is mixed in a crystal lattice of Ge, it will occupy some of the lattice sites. Four out of five electrons of impurity form bonds with the four neighbouring Ge atoms. The fifth electron is extra and is responsible for the conductivity of crystal. Since, the conductvity is due to negatively charged electrons, the semiconductor so obtained is called n-type semiconductor.
