15.

Which of the following functions represents a simple harmonic oscillation?

  • sinωt - cosωt

  • sin2ωt

  • sinωt + sin2ωt

  • sinωt - sin2ωt

A.

sinωt - cosωt

(a) SHM

The given function is

  sin ωt - cos ωt

Multiply and divide by 2 on both side

⇒  = 2  12 sinωt - 12 cosωt

     = 2 sinωt × cosπ4 - cosωt × sinπ4

Since  cosπ4 = 12 and  sinπ4 = 12

     = 2 sin ωt - π4

The function represent the SHM as it can be written in the form

   α = sin ωt + ϕ

Its period is 2πω

(b) Periodic but not SHM

the wave sin2ωt is periodic but not SHM because the acceleration in this  motion is not proportional to the displacement yet it is periodic.

  sin2ωt = 1 - cos2ωt2

⇒ sinωt = 1 - cos2ωt2

When  t = T  then  1 - cos2ωt = 0

   cos2ωt = 1

      2ωt = 2π

⇒   T = πω

Hence the option (a) represents the periodic function.
