A cell of emf 2 V and internal resistance 1.2  is connected with an ammeter of resistance 0.8  and two resistors of 4.5  and 9 is shown as in the diagram below:

i) What would be the reading on the ammeter?

ii) What is the potential difference across the terminals of the cell?

Given,

E = 2 V, r = 1.2 , R = external resistance

Let 4.5 straight capital omega  and 9 straight capital omega are connected in parallel, then equivalent resistance becomes,

1 divided by straight R subscript straight P space end subscript space equals space 1 divided by 4.5 plus space space 1 divided by 9 space

1 over R subscript P equals space fraction numerator 2 plus 1 over denominator 9 end fraction equals space 3 over 9 equals space 1 third

RP = 3 straight capital omega

Now, 0.8 straight capital omega, and RP resistance in series, then total resistance is,

straight R space equals space 3 space plus space 0.8 space equals space 3.8 space straight capital omega

i) Current in 0.8 straight capital omega  resistance, I = Error converting from MathML to accessible text.
ii) Terminal voltage, V = E – I r = 2 – 0.4 × 1.2 = 2 – 0.48 = 1.52 Volt
