Using prpoperties of determinants, prove that $|\begin{matrix} b + c & a & a \\ b & a + c & b \\ c & c & a + b \end{matrix}| = 4 abc$

$|\begin{matrix} b + c & a & a \\ b & a + c & b \\ c & c & a + b \end{matrix}| = 4 abc$

Applying $R_{1} \Rightarrow R_{1} - R_{2} - R_{3}$ ,

$∆ = |\begin{matrix} 0 & 2 c & 2 b \\ b & a + c & b \\ c & c & a + b \end{matrix}|$

Applying $C_{2} \Rightarrow C_{2} - C_{1}, C_{3} \Rightarrow C_{3} - C_{1}$

$∆ = |\begin{matrix} 0 & - 2 c & - 2 b \\ b & a + c - c & 0 \\ c & c & a + b \end{matrix}|$

= 2c(ab + b²- bc) - 2b(0 - ca - c²+ bc)

= 2abc + 2b²c - 2bc²+ 2abc + 2bc²- 2b²c

= 4abc

Hence proved.

A rectangle is inscribed in semicircle of ardius r with one of its sides on the diameter of the semicircle. Find the dimensions of the rectangle to get maximum area. Also, find the maximum area.
