Sketch the following pyramids.
(i) Pyramid of number (ii) Pyramid of biomass. (iii) Pyramid of energy.
Construct a pyramid of biomass, starting with phytoplankton. Label three trophic levels. Is the pyramid upright or inverted? Why?
(i) Pyramid of biomass
(ii) Pyramid of biomass in an aquatic ecosystem is always inverted.
(iii) The biomass primary producer (PP) phytoplanktons is smaller than biomass of zooplanktons. The latter constitute primary consumer (PC). The biomass of carnivores i.e. fish, a secondary consumer (SC) is more than the biomass of primary consumer. Then the pyramid of biomass of aquatic ecosystem is inverted.
Pyramid of Biomass
Define ecological pyramids and describe with examples, pyramids of number and biomass.
