The Dead Sea or Salt Sea is a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and Palestine to the west.
It contains significant concentrations of sodium chloride or other mineral salt. The hypersaline nature (34.2% salinity) of the water body makes it almost impossible for the organisms to flourish in it and hence the name.
It is 304 m (997 ft) deep, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. The surface and shores of the Salt Sea are 423 metres (1,388 ft) below sea level, making it Earth’s lowest elevation on land.
It is 8.6 – 9.6 times as salty as the ocean, and one of the world's saltiest bodies of water.
The Dead Sea’s unusually high salt concentration makes people to float in it due to natural buoyancy.
